Members are invited to join Jeffrey Spier, Senior Curator of Antiquities at the Getty and curator of the exhibition, for an exclusive first look at Cursed! The Power of Magic in the Ancient World. Step into a spellbinding world where people across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome turned to magic for protection, healing, and influence over forces beyond the human realm. This groundbreaking exhibition brings together rare objects dating from 2000 BCE to 300 CE — including intricately carved ivory wands, luminous gems, magical papyri, and lead curse tablets — on loan from the Louvre, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other major institutions.
These small, intimate tours, led directly by the exhibition’s curator, offer members a rare opportunity to explore the exhibition’s themes up close. Guests will examine how ancient cultures used spells, amulets, and ritual objects to navigate the seen and unseen worlds and discover the shared human desire to shape fate and seek power beyond the everyday.
The tours take place during the Member Preview event, and attendees are encouraged to enjoy the full experience before or after their selected tour time.
