Quillwork Demonstration by Leonard D. Harmon | 11:00a.m.–5:00p.m. | Monroe Street Lawn
Join artist Leonard D. Harmon for a captivating demonstration of zig-zag stitch quillwork, a technique celebrated in various tribes, particularly among the Woodland and Northern Plains cultures. Harmon will use traditional tools, including deer antler, brain-tanned deer hide, and porcupine quills, to create stunning works of art.
A citizen of the Lenape Tribe of New Jersey and the Nanticoke Tribe of Delaware, Harmon now resides on the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indian Reservation. The Toledo Museum of Art recently commissioned a piece by him for the permanent collection: a quilled 'tall bonnet' inspired by an 18th-century example, set to be featured in the upcoming Return to Turtle Island exhibition in spring 2025.
Harmon will be demonstrating live stitch quillwork throughout the day at the Toledo Museum of Art, and the finished piece will be available for purchase in the TMA store at a later date.
