TMA invites you to join photographer and artist Lynn Whitney for an exploration of human impact on the resilient Lake Erie. Dr. George Bullerjahn will further the conversation by discussing the ongoing and complicated relationship between Lake Erie’s identity as a troubled natural resource while simultaneously providing for the well-being of millions of people who populate its shores.

Following their lecture, enjoy complimentary coffee and tea with an opportunity to have your copy of Lake Erie signed by Lynn from 3-4pm. The book signing will be located on the Canaday Bridge near Libbey Court. Also, stop by Gallery 4 for an Ask me Docent hour from 2:30-3:30pm to discuss Silver Erie by Maya Lin, an inspirational work for Lynn.

George Bullerjahn is Professor Emeritus of Biology at BGSU and is the founding Director of the NIH/NSF funded great Lakes Center for Fresh Waters and Human Health. He earned his A.B. in Biology at Dartmouth College, followed by a PhD in Biology from the University of Virginia. Following the NIH postdoc at the University of Missouri, he arrived at BGSU in 1988.

Dr. Bullerjahn’s lab studies the microbiology of aquatic systems, focusing largely on the formation, persistence and decline of toxic cyanobacterial blooms that affect water quality in Lake Erie and lakes around the world. He currently has active projects in both Lake Erie and Lake Victoria in Africa.

Lynn Whitney is an Associate Professor Emeritus at Bowling Green State University. She was head of the photography area in the School of Art for 34 years and specializes in traditional fine art in black and white. Lynn earned her BFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art and her MFA in photography from Yale University Art School.

Her most recent accomplishment includes the publishing of Lake Erie, in the fall of 2023. Lynn captures the changing shores of Lake Erie as well as complex and underlying emotions of loneliness, grief, determination, resilience, and remembrance within each shot. She reminds the audience of the continuous and vital relationship between land-based life and water, along with our human need for connection on every level.
